International Literacy Day

Today, September 8th is international literacy day. An article in the Deseret news today said, "More than 780 million of the world's adults (nearly two-thirds of whom are women) do not know how to read or write, and between 94 million and 115 million children lack access to education."

I believe that many of the worlds problems could be solved if more people read. Reading enriches our lives in ways that nothing else can. Knowledge is power. As a young slave, Frederick Douglass knew this when he traded bread to the street childen so that they would teach him to read. In honor of International Reading Day, visit your local library or bookstore, and read to a child.
