International Literacy Day

Today, September 8th is international literacy day. An article in the Deseret news today said, "More than 780 million of the world's adults (nearly two-thirds of whom are women) do not know how to read or write, and between 94 million and 115 million children lack access to education."

I wish I could find a link to the entire article, but if you live in Salt Lake City, Utah, go grab a copy of the Deseret news, turn to section C6 and read all about it.

I believe that many of the worlds problems could be solved if more people read. Reading enriches our lives in ways that nothing else can. Knowledge is power. As a young slave, Frederick Douglass knew this when he traded bread to the street childen so that they would teach him to read. He went on to become a wonderful writer and orator. Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass

In honor of International Reading Day, visit your local library or bookstore, and read to a child.

  1. That's interesting. It's a cause I'd like to be more involved with.

  2. I totally agree with your comment-- with reading, you can go anywhere (through a book) and learn about anything. I had no idea the numbers were so high.
